Debt Collectors
With today’s economy rising and falling it isn’t surprising to see businesses downsizing, wage cuts, layoffs and closures in huge proportions. People who once spent most of there time shopping at leisure are now concerned with how to make ends meet. It is not unusual to see the worried faces of fathers or the tears of a mother concerned about their financial circumstances as it relates to raising their family. These economic concerns pave the way for numerous past due notices and collection phone calls. Companies are also feeling the sting as loans default and payments are steadily missed on repayment agreements.
The creditors struggle to utilize every moment to make money and therefore do not have the time to track delinquent payments. The time a creditor takes to chase a delinquent debtor takes away from time that could have been spent generating profits. This is why after six months of consistent delinquency a creditor will place an account with a debt collection agency. The debt collection agency employs debt collectors whose sole purpose is to collect the debt. The debt collector’s success is gauged by the number of delinquent accounts they resolve.
A debt collector is trained in the area of the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. These guidelines were designed for the fair treatment of consumers as it relates to delinquent debt. The debt collector must operate under the umbrella of fairness while handling the account in an assertive manner to get the debtor to resolve the account. The debt collector uses education to encourage the debtor to resolve the account. The debt collector must use rebuttals to challenge the debtor’s reasons for delinquency. There must also be active probing conducted during the course of any contact the debt collector has with the debtor. Probing not only qualifies the debtor’s intentions but it also provides useful information that enables the debt collector to perform their duties. The contact is not always negative this approach often offers relief to a debtor with intentions to pay that may lack resources to resolve immediately.
